Starting a new exercise routine, starting a new business, starting any new habit a little at a time.
“I want to start a new habit, but I never stick with it!”. You try to start new habits, you have energy for something greater, but it always seems to fail. Or does it? Let’s start this habit differently. I’ll break it down for you.
Steps to Start a New Habit
- Start small. I mean real small. One minute. You heard right. Get your shoes on an go for a walk for 60 seconds. Everyday, or 3 times a week, whatever you decide. Decide, then get in your 60 seconds.
- Instead of mastery, focus on building the habit. You aren’t going to start out running a mile or 150 pound deadlifts (get it girl), start with the habit.
- Congratulate yourself for showing up. Forgive yourself when you can’t. Start over. Repeat.
If you at least initially separate the habit from getting good at the thing, you will kick in your brain’s automatic responses and it WILL become easier. Then you can build on that foundation and get better. Try it, you’ve got this! I believe it you.
Want More? I HIGHLY Recommend Atomic Habits by James Clear.
Each week we curate all of the inspiring things we love this week, and bring them to you! Our mission is to help you not just survive, but to THRIVE!
Atomic Habits
This book is amazing. Buy Atomic Habits here affiliate link. I have the audiobook AND the paperback. My biggest takeaway is that the act of creating a habit, is different than the act of PERFECTING the habit. For instance, James Clear describes someone who he worked with who would go to the gym and leave after only a few minutes. Great read for whatever habit you are working on creating.
