Cleaning an indoor or outdoor water or waterfall fountain is easy. Residue from minerals in water can spell trouble for your fountains. Remove those built up minerals! Improve the flow or your fountain and clean off that icky mineral residue. That flaky, crunchy residue that looks like the bottom of a boat can make your beautiful fountain look ugly – and reduce the fountain’s water flow.
Steps to Clean your Waterfall Fountain
- Drain your fountain.
- Test anything you’ll put on or in your fountain in an inconspicuous area. Different cleaners, even natural cleaners, can discolor some fountains. Check the owner’s manual on your pump to make sure it can handle a vinegar soak.
- Use soapy water and a natural scrub brush or plastic scrub brush to clean gunk off – don’t worry about getting the crunchy residue off just yet, just get through the grime.
- Rinse
- Fill a Spray Bottle with 1/2 water & 1/2 regular vinegar.
- Spray this mixture on the fountain and let it sit for 30 minutes. You can also run this mix through the fountain but read the owner’s manual first to make sure it’s ok.
- Scrub.
- Repeat as many times as needed. If this isn’t working, you can use straight vinegar, again, be sure to test in an inconspicuous area.
- Rinse throughly – soap or vinegar residue is not good for birds that drink at your fountain.
- Refill with purified water.
Prevent Mineral Buildup on your Fountain
- Use purified water when possible to fill the fountain. You can buy gallons of this at the store for small fountains
- For large outdoor fountains, use a hose filter. This will help keep minerals from creating build up in the first place.
Using these tips you can keep your indoor or outdoor fountain looking great!
